About Us

Scottish Measure was formed in Manchester in 1986. The band members, although not born in Scotland, all have strong Scottish conections. They are skilled dancers as well as musicians, all being trained in Scottish Country and Highland dancing to demonstration standard.

Depending on the event, Andrew may play on his own, or be joined by one or more of the band members.

Andrew Lyon - band leader and accordion
Andrew learned piano at an early age and later progressed to the accordion. At the age of 20, having danced for many years already, he formed the Scottish Measure band. He is a well known accompanist for Scottish Dancing and plays regularly at day schools across the UK and Europe and at the RSCDS Summer School in St Andrews. He has composed several tunes for Scottish Dancing, many of which have been published as lead tunes.

David Queen - fiddle
A founder member of the band, his mother fostered his love of Scottish music being a music teacher herself. David is a qualified teacher of Scottish country dancing and also teaches Highland dancing. He has devised many popular dances and the tunes that accompany them.

Heather Jamieson - drums
Andrew's sister and a founder member of the band. She listened to Scottish dance music from an early age and developed her love of this music and its associated dance form, being especially taken with the beat, rhythm and sound of the drum.

James Gray - keyboard
Immersed in Scottish dancing from an early age, he also composes Scottish dance music and is a well known accompanist for Scottish dancing, having played for day schools and dances all over the world. He first played in the band whilst studying for an MSc at Manchester University.  James has also released his own CD's, Host of the Air, Piano Dance and Opus Dance.

Phill Jones - accordion
Phill provides second box adding depth to the band, when he isn't busy with his own band; Phill Jones Scottish Country Dance Band. See the Links page.
